CORPORATE CHIC COLOUR GUIDE – CHOOSING COLOURS THAT FLATTER YOU
It’s hard to conceive that when it comes to colours to suit you there could be a hierarchy. But it’s true! Some are Blue Bloods, others are Commoners and still others are like Switzerland – neutral. But which are you and how do you tell?
Come with me on an insightful journey beyond the rainbow, where Disney movies and yodellers collide…
THE COLOUR WHEEL
SKIN TONE TEST
There is a simple test that determines your skin tone.
Look at your wrists in daylight. If your veins are blue then cool tones in your wardrobe will work well with your skin. But don’t get a big head about being a blue blood unless you’ve already snagged a Prince. And even then, look out! You could be the subject of the next Disney movie! Where’s your credibility then?
If your veins are green in daylight warm tones are for you. But hang 5… that doesn’t commit you to a life of serfdom. In fact, many Disney movies are based on the rags-to-riches theme.
If your vein colour is neither green nor blue perhaps starring in animated features is not for you. Regardless, this indicates your skin tone is neutral and many people blessed with neutrality continue to lead normal lives – and yodel, like the Swiss.
Blue bloods, these are for you. Green-blooded commoners, these are for you.
BUT… WHAT ABOUT MY HAIR?
Generally, the lighter your hair colour the softer the tones are that suit you.
So, a blonde with warm or cool skin tone should go for softer colours like pastels. A brunette will light up room in the bolder colours.
Now, before anyone calls the LAPD, I didn’t hire stalkers to pin down the following fame junkies and hold their wrists up to the sun. Once an eye for picking skin tone is developed, this is unnecessary. To explain; it is the existence of pigment in your skin which results in colouring of the veins. So the absence of it leads to…
Compare the skin tones of Meg and Gwyneth. It really is chalk and cheese! Sorry Gwynnie, you’re cheese – but not a blue vein, I hasten to add. She’s more your Jarlsberg. So the yellow pigmentation colours her veins green. Blonde + green veins = warm pastels.
Katy would happily be considered a bold version of anything. For our purposes, she’s a bold version of Meg due to her dark hair. Brunette + Blue Blood = Cool Mid-Tones.
My husband loves Halle Berry. He wants to make a berry smoothie out of her. No wonder she doesn’t return his calls. Anyway, Brunette + Green Veins = Warm Mid-Tones.
